I live in Tokyo. To some foreigners, that means many things. One might think of being in Japan’s capital city as similar to being a foreigner in France. Or perhaps Tokyo is like New York, but with a different accent and entirely different culture.

But to me, Tokyo is much more than a city in the Far East. It is more than a city in Japan. It has a personality of its own, one that I deeply feel.

When I first arrived in Tokyo, I was astonished by how similar it was to America in how people spoke, dressed and lived. I was even more surprised when I realized how different the culture was. That made me think about the many things that set Tokyo apart.

Here are my top nine reasons why I love living in Tokyo:

1) Shibuya

Some cities are built for tourists. Shibuya is built to attract tourists. Crowds spill out of the station and line up at the store fronts. It is intense at times, like any international city, but unlike Paris, Parisians and Tokyoites alike are always on alert for someone giving them the „evil eye“. Shibuya’s busiest streets are the reason for the „evil eye“ in Paris, the Champs-Elysées, and everywhere else. But in Tokyo, you are always on alert for someone who is giving you the „shibusa“ (evil eye).

2) The people of Tokyo

Some people are all about appearances, and in Tokyo, that means dressing up. It’s somewhat silly, but almost everyone dresses up to go to the office, whether it’s to a school, a government agency or a corporation. When I first arrived in Japan, I thought it was because I am a woman, but I quickly learned that Tokyoites dress up at all times.

Why? Because they do. After all, they are in a Japanese culture that emphasizes the importance of appearances.

If you want people to take you seriously, dressing up is important.

3) The beauty of the city

From Tokyo’s train stations to the streets of the city, you can see the beauty of the metropolis
