Microsoft’s Key Management Service (KMS) allows Windows® Server 2003 SP1 and later customers to host an application that tracks the activation status of a group of computers. KMS provides organizations with KMS keys that can be used to activate Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
The KMS host communicates with computers that need to be activated via a DirectAccess server. KMS enables computers that have been activated using KMS to be returned to a valid state, regardless of whether they need to be activated again. If KMS hosts are properly administered, all computers that run a KMS host are eligible to be returned to a valid state without requiring manual intervention.
The KMS host tracks the status of registered computers by looking for the KMS key and the KMS server certificate. If a computer that has been registered to be activated has not been activated for 6 months, the computer will be returned to a valid state.
Previously, Microsoft’s Key Management Service 1.0 could only activate Windows Server 2003 and it could not work with the new Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
