Smallville is an American superhero television series created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar which aired on the WB network from September 22, 2001 to May 19, 2011 and concluded with a special two-hour series finale entitled „Absolute Justice“. The series is set in the fictional town of Smallville, Kansas, and follows the young Clark Kent, who is destined to become the world’s greatest superhero, Superman.
The series chronicles Clark’s journey from gifted but highly reserved teenager to full-fledged superhero. The series‘ emphasis on Clark’s personal growth and character development were themes that were inspired by the authors‘ own experiences, along with those of the writers‘ parents and grandparents. Much of the show’s dialogue is written by Brian Peterson, who also serves as the executive story editor. Smallville was filmed on location around the Kansas City area, primarily in Liberty, Missouri, and Lansing, Kansas. The Fox Broadcasting Company (FBC) picked up Smallville for the 2001–2002 season. Most of the first season of Smallville was filmed in the fall of 2000 and was originally broadcast on the WB network in the United States from September 2001 to May 2002. The second season was broadcast from September 2002 to April 2003, the third season was broadcast from September 2003 to April 2004, and the fourth season was broadcast from September 2004 to May 2005.
The first season aired with an average of 9.3 million viewers, and the second season was watched by a combined total of 9.7 million viewers. The third season was watched by 10.6 million viewers. The fourth season was watched by 9.8 million viewers.
Smallville concludes after four seasons and 117 episodes with a two-hour series finale titled Absolute Justice. The season finale featured the death of Lex Luthor, who was portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum.
