A few weeks ago, one of my students asked a simple question: What would a government do to solve the homelessness crisis?

I responded by asking: What would Jesus do?

It isn’t enough for us to know how a government works, or what it does. What we need is to know how Jesus would work.

Jesus came and asked us, the people of God, to take a simple (in most cases, free) act of faith.

He asked us to believe that if we turn to him we can find salvation.

If we take that, all we need to do is follow him.

Jesus taught on the road. He was a refugee. He taught from a gazebo in the public square. He was an itinerant preacher, a missionary.

He taught as he moved. The movement, that is, is his ministry. He has no organizational structure. Jesus is not like the federal government.

He neither calls someone to do something nor tells them how to do something. He calls people to follow him. He summons people to follow him.

In fact, Jesus is not interested in structures. He is not interested in even having a public ministry. He is more interested in leading people to himself.

When people flock to him, he doesn’t tell them what to do. He baptizes them.

Jesus turned the world upside down. He overturned everything. He turned culture on its head. He overturned the political and spiritual landscape.

He did this through forgiveness.

When God forgives us, we become obedient.

We become people who follow Jesus.

When people decide to follow him, they follow him with their whole heart.

Which brings us back to the homeless. If people are willing to follow Jesus, they will be merciful and kind.

They will not judge people based on the conditions of their life. They will not demonize people or attribute evil intentions to their fellow citizens simply because they are poor.

They will be generous. They will show love.

Those who are homeless will be welcomed. They will be given food and water.

Letter From Editor: Time to Reform Our Drug Approval Process

The first sentence of the Feb. 3, 2007, letter from Scientific Medical Review (SMR) editor David Uhlmann writing to the editor of the journal Science about the Bell, California, drug company, Merck’s, approval of Tamiflu, an antiviral drug for the flu, was, “Tested in children, it was a total disaster.”

Uhlmann, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, whose decision to send the letter became a cause célèbre in the medical community, said the fact that Tamiflu approval was so controversial was not only a sign of progress, it was “a sign of healthy debate.”

This week, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing on the topic of drug approval. Richard Grennell, a health and safety adviser to Merck, told the committee that Tamiflu had been approved because Merck believed it could help curb the amount of time that critically ill children were in the intensive care unit.

Robert K. Blumberg, a professor of medicine at the University of Michigan, and a former top Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official, told the committee that “there is no effective method to evaluate all of the important potential hazards of new drugs before they are unleashed on the world.” He went on to say that he would use an analogy from the airline industry to describe the FDA’s method of evaluating a new drug: It flies blind.
