Immediately I want to state that I am not blind to the game’s obvious flaws; indeed some are fairly major and do really stick out. I like the subject matter; the game tackles a very pertinent issue, and that’s something we should all be happy with. The game itself is very slow to begin with, but also when you get into the later stages there’s not a lot to do except react to what’s happening, this can be quite a nuisance. There’s a lot of micro-management that’s a big turn off, as well as the potential to be overwhelmed by the complications. The interface itself is easy to navigate, and the game has very straightforward controls. Overall it’s a simple, easily-managed affair.

Now there are a couple of other complaints I have, and it’s hard not to feel they’re too big to ignore. Firstly, the voice acting is very grating, and a bit odd. In the PC version, the people at Vostok! Entertainment tried to cut out the grating and made it voice-only, but even this doesn’t make it sound good. It’s ungainly and bland.

The other big issue is the fact that the game’s story is very politically driven. That’s fine, but I don’t need it spelled out on my screen, as the exposition is too frequent. It’s quite a big issue, and not all of it works.

All this may be enough to put the game off, but I don’t think it is. The game has enough appeal to get me to give it a chance, and there’s nothing else quite like it. I would recommend this, despite the problems.

Mario by the amazing Wanyu Xiao-Long is a charming story-driven puzzler that somehow slipped under my radar when I released my own game, Rules of Death. It’s a game about a plumber named Mario, trying to save the girl of his dreams from his arch-nemesis.
