AutoCAD was first created and developed by computer programmer Larry Reiner in 1977 at General Electric’s Advanced Scientific Computing Center (ASC) in Piscataway, New Jersey. Reiner was assigned to work on a computerized sketching program in order to perform real-time 3-D animation using pen-based drawing. Reiner chose to use the interface of an electromechanical drafting device, the Displin Graphics System (also manufactured by GE), which was in use at the time at the ASC.

The Displin Graphics System (DGS) consists of two components: a pen-driven magnetic display screen and an electromechanical drafting machine. In one version of the DGS, the screen was a 100 by 100 square of tiny permanent magnets, each magnet charged with a polarity to denote up or down. When a pen touched the screen, it would temporarily reverse the polarity of the magnet in the spot where the pen touched. The drafting machine would scan the reverse, flipping the magnet back to its normal polarity in the screen. This form of the DGS allowed the drafting machine to draw in both the x and y directions, and allowed the drafting machine to erase portions of the drawing with the pen. The pen was simultaneously reading the magnetized state of each of the small magnets in the screen, and interpreting that magnetized state to plot a digital line along the edge of the pen.

When Reiner started work on the first version of AutoCAD, the DGS was still in use at the ASC. Reiner’s first draft of AutoCAD was developed for the Displin Graphics System, but the system was already on its way to being replaced by the Electromagnetic Interference-compliant „Graphic Display System“ (GDS), an electromechanical drafting system that displayed on a cathode ray tube instead of a magnetic display.

After GDS was introduced, the work on AutoCAD continued with the DGS. The system was used in 1981 to create a working copy of Reiner’s
