AutoCAD has over 300 functions. It includes basic tools such as the ability to draw vector objects, edit and manipulate shapes, lay out drawings on paper, import and export CAD data formats, and create cross sections. The software also supports parametric tools, allowing users to design products by setting dimensions. For architects, it provides an alternative to 2D drafting software such as Adobe Illustrator. AutoCAD was originally developed for and marketed as the first entirely vector-based CAD program. At the time of its first release, the graphical display resolution was limited to 640×480 pixels and did not allow for more than one screen-displayed CAD drawing. Its predecessor, Centaur, had been designed to run on a Zilog Z80 microprocessor. It was originally created by Hirschman Associates and manufactured by Adept Technology (which was founded in 1981 by David Lischinski, a former graphic designer for HP).
