A computer could be learning in the blink of an eye, in a computer that could learn from a single example and then generalise it to a wide range of examples – the „holy grail“ of artificial intelligence.

A team of researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) has created a computer that can learn in just 10 seconds and generalise its learning to an unlimited number of examples.

Unlike human beings, the computer only sees a single example at any one time. For instance, it will only see a single video clip of a particular spider, before making a decision about whether it is poisonous or not.

When learning new concepts, the computer will then go out and „understand“ as many examples as possible. This means it can generalise what it knows, and then apply that learning to new examples.

The computer – which can be operated like a „robot“, and take on the human role of processing information – is a big step in the direction of developing computers that are intelligent.

„[This] is the most general kind of learning, one where you can learn and teach at the same time, where you learn about a world and then, you know, use what you know to gain a higher level of understanding about the world,“ said Brett Goodrich, professor of electrical engineering at USC and senior author of the study.

„If you can teach a computer to do that, then you have a computer that can learn everything.“

Goodrich added that the computer was better at learning than the human brain, as it only needed a single video to learn.

The new „learning“ machine is comprised of a neural network, which is made up of a number of small neural units. The network learns by memorising the features of an object, such as the shape, colour, and texture of the spider, and its web.

„These [individual] neural units in the network are like the neurons that make up the brain, but the network has a whole bunch of them,“ explained research fellow and first author of the study Chris Watkins.

„[The] beauty of our approach is that, by combining all the information from the example in one neural unit, you can generalise the learning to unseen examples.“
