AutoCAD has come a long way since its inception. In the early years, AutoCAD lacked some of the advanced capabilities of contemporary CAD programs. In the mid-1980s, AutoCAD did not yet support such features as rotary tooling, mass and dimensioned constraints, and part-selection tools. However, AutoCAD was still an invaluable tool for design work, and it did have the following special features:

• In early versions, AutoCAD had a pointing device similar to a mouse—it consisted of a wheel with a high-precision rotation counter. The wheel was a separate device attached to the keyboard, rather than built into the keyboard.

• On startup, AutoCAD displayed the “AutoCAD Tutorial” window, which displayed an overview of AutoCAD and highlighted a few important commands. The AutoCAD Tutorial was available as a separate application.

• When the mouse cursor hovered over an object (to highlight the object), the cursor changed to show a cross, and a color overlay appeared around the cursor. When you moved the cursor into the color overlay, the cursor turned into a “magic wand” cursor.

• You could also start AutoCAD with a hotkey. For example, pressing a keyboard combination displayed the AutoCAD “Hello, world” message on startup. In those early days, the “hello world” button on AutoCAD was a real blessing, because it meant you could see whether your graphics hardware, system, and AutoCAD installation were working.

• The keyboard was a complete design tool. You could enter dimensions and select objects using the keyboard only. This style of design worked well for small-scale drafting projects, but it made it difficult to perform large-scale edits using AutoCAD. In the early days, users were forced to use the mouse to move and modify objects. However, the 1980s were still before the time of the graphical user interface (GUI), and the mouse was not intuitive to use for objects that had complex geometries, or for objects in a more distant plane than the cursor. This was solved in AutoCAD Release 16, in 1990.
