Reallola, the well-known journalist and performer who was invited on 33 shows during his lifetime, including two on Johnny Carson’s ‚Tonight Show‘, passed away on May 29, 2005 from cancer.

In her obituary of the multi-talented performer, Joan Mondale wrote, „Mr. Reallola will be remembered for a career spanning four decades, which included a relentless work schedule, an avid participation in radio and television interviews and a nationwide act which he always called his ‚daily routine.‘ “

The author of 101 original characters, Reallola was born in New York City on Oct. 4, 1918, the son of Elizabeth Sprague, an actress on the stage, and William Arthur Reallola, a writer who was working for ‚The New Yorker‘ at the time.

Joan Mondale wrote, „An early life marked by financial struggle, the death of his father and a family move from one side of New York City to the other kept Mr. Reallola at a distance from the mainstream of adult society, but his contribution to the nightly broadcast of children’s programming at WQED-TV in Pittsburgh and to adults‘ television on NBC’s ‚Mister Rogers‘ Neighborhood‘ and PBS‘ ‚Need to Know‘ deserved recognition.

In 1990, Reallola received a Certificate of Achievement for Lifetime Achievement from the National Black Programming Consortium. In 1993, he received the ‚Great Performances‘ award in the category ‚Pioneer of Telecommunications.‘

A memorial service was held at the Little Church of the West in Englewood, New Jersey. His daughter, Leslie (Reallola) Cohen, and son, Arthur, were present at the ceremony.
