History of AutoCAD

The first AutoCAD was developed by Masao Tsujita and Karl Gross in Japan in 1982. It was developed in order to share a single, centralized design database on a mainframe computer, which enabled the sharing of designs among the design teams.

In 1985, Steve Farr (Autodesk’s original account executive), along with Donald Deckers and a small team, reengineered the mainframe-based AutoCAD in the United States, and in 1986 they joined with Masao Tsujita and the mainframe-based version to form Autodesk, Inc. They were later joined by Karl Gross.

In 1989, Autodesk acquired the rival CAD program Engineering Project (EPIC), and later that year added the first set of post-acquisition companies.

AutoCAD went from strength to strength over the next few years, as the number of CAD professionals grew. More recently, thanks to new innovative products such as AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD R14, AutoCAD Architecture and more, the market has increased tenfold.

One of the first available programs was for plotting designs in 2-D, 3-D and the user interface for the product.

AutoCAD LT (discontinued)

The first major product introduction by Autodesk was AutoCAD LT, a Windows-based version of AutoCAD. The software was geared towards small businesses that didn’t require as many features as their mainframe counterpart, but needed something cheaper to pay for it. The program also featured a menu-driven interface, which was a relatively new concept at the time.

AutoCAD LT was a light-duty version of AutoCAD and was priced around US$10,000.

Autodesk’s next release was AutoCAD LT MECAD, which was available in 1989 for US$15,000. MECAD stood for „mechanical engineering CAD.“

In the early 1990s, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT CADD. This was a combined graphic and drafting program. This program was later renamed AutoCAD LT, as it did not include a graphics design module.

The name AutoCAD changed to AutoCAD 2000 in 1992.

Interaction with other applications

AutoCAD operates as a stand-alone application with limited direct support of other applications in the CAD software suite. Instead, it is often used to integrate with other applications. The following applications are examples of applications that communicate with AutoCAD in some way:

Windows Forms Designer (AutoCAD WS) which in turn works with:
AutoLISP for Windows Form Toolkits for.NET, the native.NET library for WinForms, has supported a version of AutoLISP from Autodesk since AutoCAD 2000. AutoLISP is used to access the WinForms toolkit, which in turn accesses the native.NET library. AutoLISP for.NET 2.0 supports interaction with Windows Forms and Web Forms as well as older Windows Application Frameworks.
Visual Studio.NET and Visual Studio.NET Express editions that use:
AutoLISP for Visual Studio.NET to communicate with AutoCAD
VB.NET, both for Visual Studio.NET and Visual Studio.NET Express, for communication with AutoCAD
Visual Studio.NET: use Interop.MSDIA to work with MSDIA and WinCDE to work with Windows CE.NET.
Visual Studio.NET Express editions of MSDIA and WinCDE are supported, as are their respective AutoCAD extensions.

Scripting
AutoCAD and other products from AutoDesk generally support AutoLISP, the Visual LISP language that AutoCAD has been developed in. The two products included in the standard AutoCAD package are AutoCAD LT, which is a commercial version of AutoCAD and available as a standalone application, and AutoCAD Mechanical which is a free add-on to AutoCAD. Both AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT can be installed on the same computer.

In addition to Autodesk’s own LISP, AutoCAD also supports Visual LISP, which can run on all of the supported platforms. In AutoCAD LT, Visual LISP is also an installed add-on. The LISP-based scripting is „always“ supported, even on Windows 95. In older releases, some AutoCAD versions limited the use of Visual LISP to Windows 2000 and newer operating systems.

Police have received „tens of thousands of tips“ in the wake of the fatal shooting of teenager Jordan Edwards by a white officer in Texas.

The US state of Texas has reopened its investigation into the killing of Jordan Edwards after police received „tens of thousands of tips“ following the shooting of the black teenager by a white police officer on Tuesday.

In a statement, Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said police „are committed to receiving and reviewing all tips related to the Jordan Edwards shooting, and following up on every lead“.

The sheriff said the evidence „strongly suggests that Edwards was unarmed“ at the time of his death, but authorities have been unable to find an official report on the officer’s decision to open fire.

„We are continuing to review all evidence and conduct a thorough and complete investigation,“ he added.

Police were called to the scene in the Houston suburb of Klein just after midnight after reports of a disturbance at the house where Edwards was shot.

An unverified video of the incident appears to show the officer repeatedly yelling „gun“ at the teenager before opening fire.

The 17-year-old high school student was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.

The deputy involved was placed on administrative leave.

In a separate development, the US attorney general said on Tuesday that a white police officer who shot an unarmed black teenager in July in Ferguson, Missouri, would not face federal charges for „objectively reasonable“ use of force.

„After reviewing the facts and circumstances of this case, including the thorough, independent investigation conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and based on the evidence collected to date, I have determined that the officer’s conduct was not a violation of federal law,“ Loretta Lynch said in a statement.

„I have reached this determination with great reluctance,“ she said, „but my responsibility is to faithfully apply the law and to ensure that no one is allowed to violate any citizens‘ civil rights with impunity.“
