Storing recursive lists in Google App Engine

I have a tree structure that I would like to store in my app. I would like to store a full tree in a single item in my datastore. Any ideas on the best way to approach this?
I’d think that there are two primary approaches:

Create one root item with a list property, and create sub items as necessary.
Create a tree of item keys.

I would assume that the second approach is more scalable (because it doesn’t require storing the entire tree in memory) and may be faster. I’m just
