Change listview item background

I have a listview with items in it. The items are loaded from a web service and I am using an adapter to populate the listview. I want to change the background of the items when I select the items in the listview.
I tried using
listView.getSelectedItem().setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.selected_bg);

but it doesn’t work.
I am setting the listview’s background in the code.
