In this chapter, you discover how to use the layers and masks options, and find out how to work with a set of other features that enable the creation and painting of textures in your images.

Creating Layers

The layers of an image are separate layers that hold information about the image’s elements. While you can work on an image in Photoshop without a layer, Photoshop layers make it possible for you to add and subtract elements and work on the composite image as you add, move, or remove different layers. Photoshop lets you create and delete layers, apply layer effects, paint with the Pen tool, and work with all of the image editing tools that apply to layers.

In this section, you find out how to create layers in Photoshop using the Layers panel, and also work with layers in the layers panel and the Layers panel shortcuts.

Creating a new layer

You create a new layer in Photoshop by using the Layer (Layer ▸ New) menu, as shown in Figure 4-1. The Layers panel also displays a layer thumbnail that indicates the layer’s number and the number of elements on the layer. You can use the Layers panel to display the thumbnails of the layers on a page or to hide individual layers if they can be beneficial.

Photoshop adds a new layer when you select the New Layer item in the Layers panel. You can name the layer to match any existing layer and rename it later if needed. In this example, I named the new layer Photo.

To create a new layer with the Layer (Layer ▸ New) menu, start with a document with no layers and follow these steps:

1. **Click the New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers panel to add a new layer to the page, as shown in** **Figure** **4-1a**.

The Layers panel shows a blank layer thumbnail for the new layer.

2. **If necessary, resize the image by using the Ruler tool to make sure it fits within the bounds of the image window.**
