A layer mask is a special layer (that is, a transparent layer) whose purpose is to mask the underlying color of the layer below it. Layer masks are used when you want to leave an area of your image unchanged while blending or color-correcting a different area. Figure 2-6 shows a layer mask. Once you’ve applied a Layer Style to an image, you can create a layer mask using the Layer—Layer Mask command in the top menu bar. (You’ll learn more about Layer Masks in the next section.)

Step 1. Open Photoshop

Open Photoshop, and select File > Open to open an image for further editing.

Step 2. Set the Color Space

Select Photoshop > Color > Modes > Web. A drop-down menu will be displayed, this allows us to choose the color space. The color space explains the colors and tone of an image.

The Web color space is for photos with dull colors.

Step 3. Create and Resize the Image

Click and drag to create a square canvas in Photoshop. Then, resize the image to 1200×1200 pixels to ensure the image is square in shape.

Step 4. Fill the Image

Press Ctrl + L to open the Window, and select Fill.

The Fill with the Colors dialog box opens. Using the color picker, choose the color of the black rectangle you want to match.

To select a color from the image, press Ctrl + Click on the color you want to select. If you want to select the color using a predefined color scheme, click the color you want to select to open the color scheme that contains your color.

Note:You can also use a gray color or use the color tint brush to paint a gray color into the canvas.

Step 5. Set the Alignment

While the fill is selected, select the Align (Horizontal/Vertical) tool. Drag the image to align the canvas with the edges of the image.

Step 6. Select the Rectangle Tool

Press and hold the Shift key and press the W key to access the Rectangle tool in the toolbox.

Using the tool, click and drag a black rectangle from one corner of the canvas to another corner.

Press and hold the Ctrl key while using the Rectangle tool, and you will see a black rectangle appear in the image.
