Yesterday, The Today Show put social media to use by discussing how we use our phones to troll. The panelist had a few other dumb arguments, but the one that really irks me is when Dr. Lewis posed the question, “Are you a monk or a monk?” He said that we who use social media and Twitter are forgetting that these sites are a part of the free exchange of ideas. All part of my problem, apparently.

“It’s the ultimate 21st century form of civil discourse because a ton of people with the same perspective can come together and say, ‘Here’s what my issue is with this, I don’t agree and here’s how you can help me.’” Lewis said, hoping to bridge the gap.

This argument is outright insulting to say the least. Because there is a lot of disagreement on a forum or social media platform is no longer a free flow of ideas.

“Twitter is a version of free speech with a time limit,” Lewis said, highlighting an important fact.
