Photoshop was created in 1994 by Krita Foundation founder John Nack. Using Objective-C, he developed the freeware tool to help people manipulate digital photos as they did with 8-bit images on a computer screen in the 1980s. After several years of development at Apple, where he was a systems engineer, Photoshop was born and soon rose to become the industry standard image manipulation program.

Adding, cropping and other editing operations

In Photoshop, an image is created using layers, one of the most unique features of the program. Each layer has a distinct purpose. The five main layers are:

Background/Layer

This layer provides the background for the image and all other layers underneath it. A shape, gradient or even a text title is the basis for this layer.

Concept/Layer

The Concept layer is the canvas for the image. You can add any kind of graphics, text and color to this layer to create your concept. Then, you can edit the layer properties, which includes blending modes, colors, transparency settings and much more, to manipulate your image in terms of lighting, hue, saturation, contrast and brightness.

Elements/Layer

Elements are the actual shapes and lines that define the image. You can create, move, copy and delete elements.

Gradient/Layer

Gradients are used to apply colors to the image as lines or shapes.

Text/Layer

The Text layer is the place to add text, which is as numerous as it is important. Photoshop gives you the ability to change the style and placement of the text and add special effects to it.

Photoshop is the ideal program for manipulating images. During the past decade, the program has incorporated a wide variety of new features, including layers, masks, warp tools and drawing tools to help amateur and professional users create and manipulate images.

Even the basic features have been updated, such as the way you add images to the canvas or resize them, although a standard Macintosh mouse is still the best option for working in Photoshop.
