Other layers can be added to an image by clicking the New Layer icon, which is located at the bottom right-hand corner of the image window. The layers are also known as’masks.‘ You can also view the layer palette, which shows all the layers in the image window by clicking the image, as shown in Figure 3-2.

Photoshop is also a vector-based program. This means that an object within the file always appears flat and never goes jagged. It is more accurate than pixels. Also, vector-based programs are great for creating photographs and logos. They’re great for all graphic applications, really.

Photoshop includes many options. Because Adobe continues to release new features, some of the features that are available in one version of the program may be different in another version. For instance, some features may be available in CS5 or may not be available in a later version. Photoshop also updates several times a year and the changes between versions may be slight.

Selecting the Tools

Adobe Photoshop Elements does not contain some of the more advanced tools that Photoshop has. Therefore, it is important that you know the basics of how to work with Photoshop Elements.

Creating an Image

Elements has the Create a New Image option available in the File menu under Images. The Create a New Image will prompt you to choose your type of image and the size that it should be saved at. Once you have chosen your type of image, you can resize it to your liking.

There are several file formats that you can save your image at. You can save your image as.JPG,.PDF,.TIF,.GIF,.PNG, and.PSD. This post will cover all of the file formats that Elements allows you to save at.

You are prompted to choose the dimensions you would like your image to be saved at. You can choose any of the dimensions that you may have used in the past to save your images.

Once you have chosen your image size, click OK and your new image will be saved.

Adding a New Layer to an Image

Adding a new layer to an image is a very common workflow that you will use multiple times throughout the editing process. The steps to create a new layer in Photoshop Elements are outlined below:

In Photoshop, press Shift + CTRL + N. This will open the New Layer dialog box.

The Pencil tool appears in the Brush panel. Use this tool to draw strokes in the image, as shown in Figure 12-11.
