This game has gone platinum already. I am not surprised. Tarnished Souls is a gem of a game that fills you with swords of iron and gold. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I’m glad Persona 4 wasn’t localized and instead became a Japanese-only game on the PS3. Because that way I can play it, but most of the time when I pick it up it will remind me that I already have a copy and that it’s really not that fun. That’s the way I feel about Tarnished Souls. It’s a game that plays like Persona 4, but with all of the trappings of a fantasy RPG game. You have a main character with a story and sub-characters that you can befriend and use their skills to help you out. You’ve got a large world to explore and a ton of weapons to be used. It’s a mixed bag of all the good things you loved about the game world but thrown together with a complete overhaul of what makes a JRPGRPG so unique. It’s a good game, but it didn’t feel like a good game. It felt like more of the same, just with a few more shiny things. However, to give this game credit, it was actually pretty good. You know how I like to criticize games that follow the same formula that they’ve been using with a different pretty box? Well, this is a game that starts with the same formula. It looks really good. It comes in a beautiful box. It has an opening and ending cutscene. It features the same archetypal hero and heroine. That’s OK. I actually like it better this time. That’s not to say this isn’t Persona 4. It feels like that, just a little bit updated. The Persona 4 team really did a great job at making Tarnished Souls feel like a Persona game, but just with more of a fantasy bent to it. The combat is a lot of fun, but most of the time you’ll be fighting the same types of demons. They all feel similar and all levels can be reached quickly, but when you’re fighting a high level demon you’ll feel less like you’re fighting a 3D boss and more like you’re fighting that guy in a fight club who is just in your way. I did end up getting a new weapon or two so I can make new friends, but that’s about it. There really isn’t much of an incentive for me to keep playing this game just to take down all of
