A game like Space Scavengers should get a lot right. Developer Adam Saltsman should always consider how to make a game understandable to a broad audience, and he should always be able to think outside-the-box. Yet when it came to Space Scavengers, my experience with the game was so steeped in so many issues that it wasn’t even the most obvious one that set me off. I was angry about experiencing the stigma of being „that guy“. The stigma of having to think of a way to play a game so that the only real way to get gamers to enjoy a game is to make the levels difficult while making them look way less impressive than they should; so that when you managed to get to the end of the most challenging level, you didn’t find the satisfaction of „woo-hoo, I did it“ because there are an infinite amount of levels to go through to do it. And of having to rein in the nonsense like detail. You can’t impressively throw around, or stack 50 blocks, because it looks pointless and you know that’s what the game wants. But all of those things are things that video games are trying to be inclusive, and they are missing from Saltsman’s latest game.

Nintendo was one of the first new mega-publishers to recognize that they couldn’t just make AAA titles for a core audience and hope for the best. They had to make some way to make your experience more entertaining by involving the core fanbase with an ever-changing roster of characters.
