A Brief History of AutoCAD

AutoCAD’s predecessor, AutoCAD Drafting and Design System, was introduced in 1980. Prior to this, a „swat team“ of drafters was required to draw out any new facility, or modify an existing one.

The original version of AutoCAD was designed by Terry Proulx. AutoCAD’s success led to the development of its successor, AutoCAD LT, which could be purchased as an upgrade or as a standalone product. Later, the LT upgrade model was discontinued, and the standalone product was renamed simply AutoCAD.

Besides the desktop, AutoCAD runs on a variety of other platforms, including macOS (Microsoft Windows), Linux, iOS, Android, and others.

AutoCAD was first designed for use in the architectural industry. It is the primary tool that architects, engineers, and architects use when creating three-dimensional building models, either for their own projects or for projects for clients.

Many additional industries have since adopted the use of AutoCAD, including mechanical and electrical engineers, home builders, and even government and commercial developers.
