To start building the layers, open an image and Save it with the Layers filter preset (File⇒Save As) so you can access Layers (see Figure 4-1). In the Layers dialog box, select the file you want to save the original with no new layers (see Figure 4-2), and then click OK.

Creating an Layers Stack

Each layer can be stacked on top of other layers. Your layers can be merged into one layer, like pages of a book in one composition, or you can use the Layers panel (View⇒Layers) to keep separate layers and easily add or hide them. The amount of time you spend creating layers is time well spent and free in your ability to alter an image.

How to put text or audio on an image

First, you need to create a new image. Then, add a new document with the same size and dimensions as the original. This will be the final version of the image.

Add a new layer. You can do this by clicking on the New Layer icon at the bottom left-hand side of the Layers palette.

Click on the type tool in the Tools palette. This will allow you to select and place text or add a pre-recorded sound.

Insert any of the following into the text box:

A single character. You will need to hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and highlight a letter.

A special character, such as an ampersand ( & ) or an apostrophe ( ’ ).

The whole name of an object, such as “duck”, “cat” or “firework”.

Insert a pre-recorded sound in the audio box.

It is important that you have the type tool selected, so you don’t miss any parts of your image that need updating.

You can do this by clicking on the New Layer icon at the bottom left-hand side of the Layers palette.

Stepper motor details needed

I was recently asked to find a cheap unit for a customer who does not want to spend any money.
Any design with low current and high torque specifications on the motors (anything from up to a few amps @ 1/8th or 1/4th of a HP) would be appreciated.

Thinking about the level of torque you are talking about, I’m guessing you’re looking for stepper motors? Steppers are like a motor except they don’t turn, they push.
Maxon makes stepper motors. There are 2 versions with different numbers of steps per revolution: Bipolar (around 2200 RPM) and unipolar (around 3300 RPM). The unipolar motor is also known as a ‚leadscrew‘, so you should check to see if it is that or a stepper before deciding on one. I think the bipolar versions are cheaper, but I don’t know about speed.
You can find plenty of reviews and pages with specs and such on Amazon by searching’stepper motor‘ and then’reviews‘. The ones on Amazon are usually fairly technical, but some of the reviews are pretty readable.
A good low-cost alternative would be an ‚advance leadscrew‘, which are a couple of thin, flexible copper bands around the shaft. You can then use the helical gearing to get the torque and speed you desire from them.
If you need really cheap, you could consider a mass driver from one of the many surplus supply websites. This is basically an air-powered lathe. It’s a lot of fun to use. A portable mass driver and some good bottles of helium are all you need. The part you would purchase is a gas- or oil-powered air compressor. There are even compressed air welding guns that convert a high-pressure air cylinder into low-pressure air for your use. (And there’s a DIY version of that as well.)
